I’m Joe, and I’ve been fixing garage doors across Sydney since 2017. But really, the story goes back much further.
I grew up in Western Sydney, the eldest of three boys in a hardworking family. My old man was a builder, and some of my earliest memories are holding the torch for him while he worked under the house. That’s where I picked up a love for tools, structure, and getting things done right the first time.
I went to Parramatta High School, and after finishing Year 12, I decided uni wasn’t for me. I wanted to work with my hands, help people, and build something of my own. That’s when I enrolled at TAFE NSW and earned my Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade, with a focus on doors, springs, motors, and roller mechanisms. I also completed Garage Door Installation and Servicing Accreditation through a specialised trade program, covering sectional, tilt, roller, and automatic systems.
Before starting GDR Sydney, I worked alongside experienced techs from brands like B&D, Steel-Line, Merlin, Gliderol, and Grifco, gaining hands-on knowledge in everything from spring tensioning to motor replacement and emergency repairs. I also completed Working at Heights and High Risk Work training, which means I’m certified to handle tricky installs and emergencies safely.
In 2017, I started GDR Sydney with a toolbox, a second-hand van, and a mission to offer honest garage door work people could rely on. Today, we cover all of Sydney, offering 24/7 emergency services, repairs, installations, and maintenance for homes and businesses. No pushy upsells, no waiting days for a booking, just the help you need, when you need it.
At home, I’ve got my biggest fans, Lisa, my wife, and our two kids, Ava and Luca. Lisa helped with admin in the early days and still keeps the business running smoothly behind the scenes. The kids think the best part of my job is all the remote controls I get to carry around.
When I’m off duty, I enjoy a barbecue with the family, watching the Eels play, or heading out for a weekend drive along the coast. But if a call comes in, I pick up, because someone’s garage door might be stuck, and I know what that’s like.
